Hadria was a small place on the northern coast, it gave its name to the water beside it, and a Roman family from there gave its name to an emperor — and everything downstream is named after a town that is now several miles inland.

Where it comes from

The story of Adriene

The town silted up. Hadria was a port when it named the sea and the coastline has moved since, which leaves the Adriatic named after somewhere that no longer touches it. The emperor Hadrian came from a family that had originated there, built a wall across Britain and a villa outside Rome, and put the name into the imperial record; six popes took it afterwards, and the only English pope in history was one of them. French made Adrienne for women with two n letters, because that is how French spells that ending, and this spelling uses one.

Meaning

from Hadria

The Roman family name marks descent from a town in Picenum. The sea takes its name from the same place, so the name and the Adriatic are relatives.

Fashion outlook

Adriene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has forms in French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.
  • The place behind it is real and can be found on a map, if not on the coast.
  • It carries short forms that are standing names elsewhere.
What to consider
  • Adrienne is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
  • The stress is genuinely unsettled between the English and French readings.
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States.
