Adriann
Feminine · “from Hadria”
Adriann is given to both — 960 girls and 146 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Adriann sits precisely between two spellings that have been kept apart for a long time. Adrian is the man's name; Adrienne is the woman's. This one doubles the n without adding the e, and the record shows it going to sons and daughters both — which is what a spelling in the middle of a fork tends to produce.

The story of Adriann
The saint who carried the name into northern Europe was a soldier. Adrian of Nicomedia was, by the tradition, an officer of the imperial guard who was so struck by the endurance of the Christians he was ordering tortured that he declared himself one of them and was executed with them. His relics traveled to Rome and then to Flanders, and by the later Middle Ages he was one of the most heavily venerated saints in the Low Countries and northern Germany — patron of soldiers, and, by a turn of logic that says a good deal about medieval guilds, of butchers as well. Towns held fairs on his day; brotherhoods took his name. That is how a Roman place name ended up on children a thousand miles from Hadria and a thousand years after the town mattered.
Meaning
from Hadria
The name is Roman and geographical: it identified a family as coming from Hadria, a town in northern Italy. It carries no quality, virtue or description — it is simply a place of origin turned into a family name and then into a personal one, which was an ordinary Roman practice. Everything about the derivation is agreed. The only thing this spelling changes is which children the name is given to.
How the name formed
- Hadria, a town in northern Italy, gives a Roman family name
- Adrian of Nicomedia is executed and later venerated across northern Europe
- Adrian settles as the masculine form and Adrienne as the feminine
- Adriann doubles the n without the final e and is given to both

Pronouncing Adriann
AY-dree-un
Three syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled n does not add a syllable and does not shift the stress; readers who take the ending as the name Ann may put a beat on it, which produces a pronunciation the standard spellings never suggest.

Fashion outlook
Adriann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A well-established name with a clear Roman history and a familiar sound
- Works for a son or a daughter without needing to be adapted
- Short forms available that suit either, and none of them require explanation
- Two much commoner spellings surround it, one masculine and one feminine, and both will be substituted by people writing from hearing.
- The ending looks like the name Ann, which will lead some readers to expect a daughter and others to misread the stress.
- A name given to both sexes gives no signal on a written list, which is a lifelong small friction rather than a problem.
