The story of Adolphus
Adolf was a standard European name for a millennium, and Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was among the great commanders of the Thirty Years' War. German and Scandinavian emigration brought Adolphus to America, where it appears through the nineteenth century and peaked around 1885. Its use collapsed entirely after 1933 for reasons that require no explanation.
Meaning
noble wolf
From the Germanic adal, 'noble', and wulf, 'wolf'. Both elements are ordinary and extremely productive in Germanic naming; the wolf was an admired animal in that tradition rather than a feared one. Adolphus is the Latinized form used in documents and by royalty.

Fashion outlook
Adolphus sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The noble-wolf meaning is transparent and, in its own tradition, entirely admiring.
- A great seventeenth-century Swedish king carries the Latin form.
- Dolph is available as a short form with its own record.
- The twentieth-century association is total and is why the name effectively ended.
- Three syllables and a spelling that has to be dictated.
- It is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century.
