Where it comes from

The story of Adolph

Adolf and Adolphus were carried by German electors, Swedish kings and a long line of ordinary families, and German-speaking emigration brought the name to America in quantity, where the ph spelling was standard. It stood in the American top hundred and twenty for boys in the early 1880s and remained in steady use for fifty years. It then fell off the chart almost completely in the 1940s and has never returned, for reasons no one needs explained.

Meaning

noble wolf

From the Germanic athal, 'noble', and wulf, 'wolf'. Wolf was one of the commonest second elements in old Germanic names — it appears in Rudolph, Randolph, Wolfgang and Ulf — and it was an admiring reference to the animal's endurance and hunting in company, not a warning.

Adolph sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 673 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Adolph has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The compound is transparent and its elements are among the best documented in Germanic naming.
  • Adolfo remains in ordinary use in Spanish and Italian, so the root has a living form.
  • It has a thousand years of record behind it in northern Europe.
What to consider
  • The name is inseparable in modern memory from the leader of Nazi Germany, and it disappeared from use for that reason.
  • That association is universal in the English-speaking world and is not going to fade.
