Adiel
Masculine · “ornament of God”
Adiel is given to both — 2,944 boys and 119 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Adiel comes out of the genealogies of the Hebrew Bible, where it belongs to more than one man in the books of Chronicles, and it has been carried since by Hebrew speakers and, more recently, by Spanish-speaking families in the United States. Three syllables, all of them open and easy, ending on that -el that closes Daniel, Gabriel and Ariel. It is the kind of name people can say correctly after hearing it once, even if they have never met it before.

The story of Adiel
Adiel is Biblical Hebrew, and it appears in the book of 1 Chronicles, where it is borne by more than one man in the long lists of families and officials — among them the father of a steward set over King David's storehouses. It stayed largely a name of the text rather than of the street for most of its history, revived in modern Hebrew in Israel, where it is given to boys and, less often, to girls. In the United States its recent showing is concentrated in Texas, California and New York, where Hebrew biblical names have long moved comfortably between English- and Spanish-speaking households. Its wave here is a young one: the great majority of American Adiels are still children.

The Dawn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adiel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dawn climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dawn's path sketches the road Adiel is walking now.
Adiel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in both English and Spanish, with no silent letters and no competing variant spellings in wide use.
- Ends in the same -el as Daniel, Gabriel and Samuel, so it reads as a familiar kind of name even to people meeting it for the first time.
- Has a real short form, Adi, which is used independently as a given name in Hebrew.
- Documented in the Hebrew Bible and still in living use in Israel — a long record behind a name that is uncommon here.
- Two pronunciations circulate in the US: ah-dee-EL and AY-dee-el. Your child will hear both and will spend some energy correcting one of them, or will simply answer to either.
- It sits close to Abdiel, another Hebrew biblical name that is better known in American records. Expect the occasional b inserted by ear, and the occasional Adriel or Adele written down instead.
- Almost every Adiel will be the only one in the room, which cuts both ways: no last-initial in class, but also a name that has to be spelled aloud at appointments and coffee counters for life.
- Hebrew and Israeli usage includes some girls, though American records show it as a boys' name — a mismatch that rarely surfaces here, but might if the name travels.
