Where it comes from

The story of Adelin

Adal was one of the most productive elements in Germanic naming, and the Normans carried a whole set of names built on it into England — Adela, Adeline, Alice. Adeline was in medieval English use, faded, and returned in the nineteenth century. Adelin without the final e is used in Romanian and French and appears in American records recently, part of the return of the whole Adeline family.

Meaning

noble

From Germanic adal, noble; Adela was the base, Norman French added the diminutive -ine to give Adeline, and the same element opens Adelaide, Alice, Alison and Albert.

Adelin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 51 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Adelin went to 42 girls in 2025, but Adelyn, Adelynn and Addelyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,712, which makes it the 192nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,385 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 939 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 38,268 for Adelin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning with a documented record over a thousand years long.
  • Addie is a warm short form that works at any age.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Adeline and Adalynn are both far more written and will be assumed.
  • In Romanian, Adelin is a men's name, which occasionally surprises.
  • Adelin, Adeline and Adelyn are all in use and get confused.
