The story of Addisen
Joseph Addison and Richard Steele produced a paper that came out six days a week for less than two years and changed how English prose sounds. The Spectator was written as if by a small club of characters, covered manners, marriage, opera, superstition and how to read, and was addressed at a new audience of people who had money and leisure and no classical education; it was read aloud in coffee houses and reprinted for two centuries as a model of plain, exact, unshowy English. A century and a half later Thomas Addison, working in a London hospital, described a wasting illness with a characteristic bronzing of the skin, traced it to the adrenal glands, and gave it a name it has never lost.
Meaning
Son of Adam
An English surname built the ordinary way, from a father's name and a word for a son. Adam is Hebrew and means a man, from the word for the red earth he is made of in the story. The ending on this spelling is a respelling of that son, chosen because the syllable is unstressed and any vowel will do.
How the name formed

Pronouncing Addisen
AD-i-sun
Three syllables with the stress at the front. The last is reduced to nothing, which is why the record holds Addison, Addisen, Addisyn and Addyson, all said identically.

Fashion outlook
Addisen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Addie is a soft, current, unisex short form available immediately.
- The meaning is transparent and can be given to a child in three words.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Four spellings of this name are in wide use and this is one of the rarer ones.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- The name says son of Adam and is now given almost entirely to daughters, which some people notice.
