Addilyn is a young name built from very old parts: the Addie that has served English speakers for centuries and the -lyn ending that Madelyn, Katelyn and Jocelyn made ordinary. It arrived on American records only at the tail end of the twentieth century, and its wave has been recent enough that most people carrying it are still children. Three soft syllables, nothing sharp in them, and a short form waiting inside the first two.

How old is the name Addilyn?

Addilyn first appears in US birth records in 1999 — 26 years ago. The typical Addilyn is a kid of about 8 — this name's wave is very recent. About 9,800 people named Addilyn are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Addilyn most popular?

Addilyn peaked in 2016, reaching #312 nationally. Today it ranks #987, 675 places below that high. See the whole 2016 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Addilyn

The older half of the name is well documented. Adal, a Germanic word for noble, gave the medieval name Adela; French speakers softened it into Adeline, and English took that form up in the Middle Ages and again with enthusiasm in the Victorian era, when Addie became one of the standard short forms. The -lyn ending is far younger — a twentieth-century American habit, drawn from Lynn and attached to dozens of names until it stopped looking like an addition at all. Addilyn is where those two meet: an old root and a recent suffix, appearing on US records only in the last stretch of the twentieth century and rising quickly from there.

Read as a form of Adeline, "noble"

Two readings compete honestly. One treats Addilyn as an American respelling of Adeline, which descends through French from the Germanic element adal, "noble" — the same root behind Adele and Adelaide. The other treats it as a modern coinage: the familiar pet form Addie joined to the productive -lyn ending, made on the pattern of Madelyn and Katelyn rather than inherited from anything. Both are defensible, and the truth for any given family is usually whichever one the parents had in mind.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Addilyn went to 256 girls in 2025, but Addilynn, Adilynn and Adilyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 519, which makes it the 510th most-given girls’ name of the year — 477 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,097 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 6,278 for Addilyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Comes with Addie built in — a short form with a two-hundred-year record in English, so the everyday name is already familiar even where the full spelling is not.
  • The -lyn ending is one most Americans read correctly on sight; people will pronounce it right even when they cannot spell it.
  • Rare enough in any single school year that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
  • Connects to a large, well-established family of names — Adeline, Adela, Adele, Adelaide — for anyone who wants a longer or older-sounding formal option.
What to consider
  • The spelling competes with Adalyn, Adalynn, Addilynn, Adilynn and several more. Expect to spell it out often, and expect forms to come back wrong sometimes. Choosing the spelling you like best and repeating it calmly is most of the job.
  • The -lyn ending belongs to a specific and recent stretch of American naming. Names built that way tend to read as of their moment, which can be a pleasure or a drawback depending on how much that matters to you.
  • It is chiefly an American form. Abroad, Adeline or Adela will be the recognized version, and Addilyn may be read as a variant of them.
  • Its rise has already crested and is easing back — which mostly means fewer duplicates ahead, not that the name is going anywhere.
