Addie is one of the oldest continuously used familiar forms in the American record, given to daughters and sons alike in its first decades and still in ordinary use now. What it shortens is a genuinely open question: at least four formal names produce it, and most families never wrote down which one they meant.

Our story of Addie
One of the most reproduced photographs in American labor history shows a barefoot girl standing between two rows of spinning frames in a Vermont cotton mill, arms folded, looking straight at the camera. Lewis Hine took it while working for a committee that was trying to get child labor restricted, and he made a point of writing down what he could get: the mill, the town, the job, and where he could manage it, the child's name. A century later a researcher used those notes and the census to trace her. She had gone on working in mills, married twice, had children and grandchildren, and lived into her nineties, and her family had no idea the photograph existed until they were shown it. The detail that made the tracing possible was the one thing photographers of the poor usually leave out, which is the name.

Adelaide, Adeline, Ada and Adelia all yield this short form, and in the modern revival Addison does too. The Germanic element they mostly share means noble, but it cannot be claimed for this spelling, because the record holds the short form on its own far more often than it holds a parent.
Pronouncing Addie
AD-ee
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled d keeps the first vowel short, which is the difference between this and a reading with a long a.

Fashion outlook
Addie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm and instantly readable, and nobody has to be told how to say it.
- Several formal names stand behind it, so a bearer can choose one later or not bother.
- It has been in continuous use for a very long time, which few short forms manage.
- Addy and Adie are both common and the spelling will be asked about.
- It is popular enough again that a classroom may hold more than one.
- It was recorded for sons in its earliest decades, though almost never now.
