adorned by God; witness of God
From the Hebrew adah, 'to adorn' or 'to pass by', joined to El, 'God'. Adiel in Chronicles is the closest biblical form and is read as 'ornament of God'. Adael also appears in the Book of Enoch. The El element is settled; the first is read two ways.

The trade-off
- The El element is genuine Hebrew and its meaning is undisputed.
- The Book of Enoch connection is a genuinely unusual piece of textual history.
- The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
- The first element is read two ways and neither is settled.
- The syllable count splits between two readings.
- Adiel is the standard biblical form.
