The word ace is a Latin coin. The Romans called their basic unit of copper an as, used the same word for the number one on a die, and English took it through French with the gambling sense intact — which is how a piece of imperial currency ended up meaning the best of something.

Where it comes from

The story of Acie

That Roman unit did more work than the card game suggests. The as was divided into twelve parts, and the word for a twelfth was uncia — which English has borrowed twice, once as ounce and once as inch, from the same Latin word taking two different routes across the Channel and the centuries. So the unit that gave us the ace also gave us both a measure of weight and a measure of length, and the reason there are twelve inches in a foot and twelve ounces in the old apothecaries' pound is that a Roman copper coin was cut into twelve pieces.

Not established

No source can be established. The resemblance to the English word may be the whole story, or the name may have come from a pair of initials, which was a common American practice. Neither can be shown and no meaning survives either way.

Acie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 40 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Acie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ace sits inside it as a short form that needs no explaining at all.
  • It is short, easy and instantly remembered.
  • It is genuinely rare and has no competing modern associations.
What to consider
  • There is no meaning to pass on, and pages that supply one are guessing.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
