The story of Abhishek
In temples across India an image is bathed daily, or on festival days, with water, milk, honey, yogurt and ghee poured over it in sequence while verses are recited, and the whole procedure is an abhisheka. The same word and the same essential act made a king: the ritual pouring is the consecration, and the ceremony is described in detail in texts two and a half thousand years old. A version of the practice traveled with Buddhism into Tibet, where an initiation is still called by the local translation of the same word. It is one of the oldest continuously performed ceremonies anywhere, and it is a name.
Meaning
anointing, ritual bathing
The Sanskrit word means a sprinkling or pouring over, used both for the daily bathing of a temple image and for a consecration. The reading is settled and the word is in current use.

Fashion outlook
Abhishek sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Abhi is a ready short form that works in every setting.
- The meaning is settled and documented in one of the oldest written traditions there is.
- It is entirely ordinary in India and genuinely rare in the United States.
- English speakers will flatten the middle and put the stress in the wrong place at first.
- The h after the b is not silent in Indian languages, which English readers will not expect.
- Outside South Asian communities it will be spelled aloud often.
