The story of Abe

Abraham is the founding patriarch of Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike, and the name has been in continuous use for three thousand years. English took it up at the Reformation, and it was common in nineteenth-century America — Abe was its ordinary clipping and became nationally famous as Lincoln's, which fixed it in American memory. It peaked around 1885.

Meaning

father of a multitude

Through Abraham, from the Hebrew Avraham. Genesis explains the change from Avram, 'exalted father', to Avraham as av hamon goyim, 'father of a multitude of nations'. The text makes the etymology explicit, which is rare and settles the question.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Abraham stands behind it as the founding patriarch of three world religions.
  • The meaning is explained in the text itself, which almost no other name can claim.
  • Three letters, one syllable, and never misheard.
What to consider
  • One American president dominates the short form entirely.
  • Given outright it stays informal; Abraham on the certificate keeps both registers.
