The story of Abdulmalik
Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan was the fifth Umayyad caliph, ruling from 685 to 705, and he reshaped the empire he inherited: he made Arabic the language of administration, issued the first purely Islamic coinage, and built the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The name has been in continuous use since. In Arabic it is written as two or three words; American record systems with a single given-name field join them, which is why Abdulmalik appears in the birth data as one word. Both forms are current on American documents and neither is a misspelling.
Meaning
servant of the King
Arabic abd means servant or slave, al is the definite article, and malik means king or sovereign. Al-Malik, the King, is among the ninety-nine names of God in Islamic tradition. The abd construction requires one of those names to complete it, and the whole is a statement of relation to God rather than a description of the bearer. The derivation is settled and the grammar is strict.

Four syllables, stress on the third. The l of the article assimilates in some positions in careful Arabic but not before an m, so this compound keeps both consonants. English readers reach it correctly on sight.

The trade-off
- It is a complete and grammatical Arabic name rather than a fragment.
- Malik is a widely used name available inside it as a short form.
- The meaning is settled and expressible in four words.
- Four syllables is long for everyday American use, so a short form is effectively required.
- Record systems split and join it inconsistently.
- It has a clear religious frame, which is a strength or a consideration depending on the family.
