Where it comes from

The story of Abdias

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Hebrew Bible and it is a single oracle against Edom; nothing is recorded about the prophet who gave it his name. A different Obadiah appears in Kings as a steward who hides prophets from Ahab. The Greek Bible rendered the name Abdias, and that is the form that entered the Romance languages. It reaches United States records almost entirely from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking families, where the Hebrew stock of names is in far wider daily use than in English.

Meaning

servant of the Lord

Hebrew Ovadyah joins eved, 'servant' or 'slave', to Yah, the shortened divine name. The construction is the same one behind the Arabic Abdullah, which means the identical thing in a cognate language. The reading is documented and undisputed. Abdias is the Greek and Latin form, which Spanish, Portuguese and French inherited.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented biblical name with a clear and humble meaning.
  • Abdi and Abi are both natural short forms in different traditions.
  • Three syllables that read correctly in Spanish and Portuguese alike.
What to consider
  • Obadiah is the English form and the two look entirely unrelated on paper.
  • The stress moves between Spanish and English, so the child will hear two versions.
  • Outside Spanish-speaking communities it will be spelled out every time.
