Abdel
Masculine · “servant of the”
Abdel is half a name. In Arabic, Abd al- means servant of the, and it is always followed by one of the names of God — Abd Allah, servant of God; Abd al-Rahman, servant of the Merciful. On its own it is grammatically incomplete, and its appearance in American records reflects how forms handle a name with a space in it. Its peak is 2017.

The story of Abdel
The abd compounds are among the oldest and most respected Arabic names, and their structure is strict: the servant word, the article, and a divine attribute. When these names reach Western record systems the space causes trouble. A form with one given-name field takes Abdel Rahman and produces either Abdel with Rahman as a surname, or Abdelrahman as one word, or Abdel alone. American birth records carry all three outcomes, and the standalone Abdel is very often the first of them rather than a deliberate choice. Where it is deliberate, it functions as a short form.
Meaning
servant of the — incomplete without a second element
Arabic abd means a servant or slave, and al is the definite article. The construction abd al- must be completed by one of the ninety-nine names of God: al-Rahman, the Merciful; al-Aziz, the Mighty; al-Karim, the Generous. Abd Allah, servant of God, is the commonest. Abd al- alone means 'servant of the' and nothing more, which is why the name is almost never used that way in Arabic-speaking countries.

Pronouncing Abdel
AB-del
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the d and l clearly sounded. Arabic gives it a fuller ahbd-el, and the article's l assimilates to the following consonant when the name is complete — Abd al-Rahman is said abd-ar-RAHMAN. On its own the assimilation does not occur.

The Hersh test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Abdel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hersh climbed just as high around 2002, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hersh's path sketches the road Abdel is walking now.
Abdel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
