Dutch, Finnish and Estonian write aa, as Danish and Norwegian once did, and all of them mean a long ah by it; Aadyn uses the two letters for the AY of Aidan instead, an English spelling of its own. The letters also make one of the shortest place names in Europe: dozens of rivers in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France are called the Aa, from an old Germanic word for water. Aadyn is one of the many spellings American families used as Aidan and its rhymes spread.
