II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Vincent

conquering

Vincentius is built on vincens, from vincere, to conquer or prevail — the same verb behind Victor, Victoria, convince and evince. The participial form matters: Victor names someone who has won, Vincent names the winning as it happens. Early Christians liked the name for exactly that reason, applying it to endurance under persecution rather than to battle. The derivation is not disputed anywhere.

vincens → Vincentius → Vincent

How it traveled

The name belonged first to a deacon of Saragossa martyred in the early fourth century, whose cult spread across Spain, Portugal and France and made the name ordinary in all three. It gained a second life through a seventeenth-century French priest who organized charity on a scale nobody had attempted before, and whose name is still on hospitals and thrift shops across the world.

Xavier

the new house

From Basque etxe ("house") plus berri ("new"), the name of the family castle in Navarre — a place name that became a surname and then a first name.

Etxeberria → Xabier → Xavier → Javier

How it traveled

The name comes from the castle of Xavier in Navarre, in the Basque-speaking north of Spain, whose name is the Basque etxeberria — the new house. Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary born there, carried that place name as his surname; through Catholic devotion to him it became a given name across Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Out loud, and in short

Vincent

VIN-sunt

VIN-sunt, two syllables, stress at the front, the second vowel reduced. French says van-SAHN with the weight at the back and a nasal ending. Italian gives four syllables to Vincenzo. The English reading has been stable for centuries.

  • Vince — The front clipped to one syllable, and a complete working name; what most Vincents go by.
  • Vinny — The front softened, strongly associated with Italian-American use, and warmly meant almost everywhere it is said.
  • Cent — The back syllable alone, rare and used mostly within a family.
  • Enzo — Taken from the end of the Italian Vincenzo, and now a standing name in its own right.

Xavier

ZAY-vee-er

Also commonly egz-AY-vee-er, especially in older and Catholic usage; both are correct and you will hear both. The Spanish Javier is ha-vee-AIR.

  • Xav — The usual English short form, informal.
  • Xavi — Standard Catalan short form, widely recognized in the Spanish-speaking world and used in English too.
  • X — Initial used as a nickname among friends and teammates.
  • Javi — Short form belonging to the Spanish Javier, used in bilingual families.
  • Also Zave.

The trade-offs, name by name

Vincent

Strengths

  • It has been in continuous use in English for many centuries without ever belonging to one period.
  • Vince and Vinny are both complete working names, and they sit at opposite ends of formality.
  • Every Catholic language has a version, so it crosses a border without translation.

To consider

  • It is strongly associated with Catholic and particularly Italian-American families, which for some is the point and for others is a history they are not part of.
  • Vinny arrives whether or not it is wanted, and it carries a set of screen associations that are hard to shake.
  • The painter is the first thing many people think of, and his story is not a cheerful one.

Xavier

Strengths

  • Works in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Catalan and Basque with only a small shift in sound or spelling — useful in a bilingual family.
  • Documented for centuries as a surname and a given name, with an unbroken run on American records since the nineteenth century.
  • Familiar to everyone without being common in any one classroom.

To consider

  • Two pronunciations circulate — ZAY-vee-er and egz-AY-vee-er — so he will spend some of his life choosing one and correcting the other. Neither is wrong, which is exactly why the question keeps coming up.
  • The X opening invites phonetic respellings: Zavier, Xzavier and Exavier all turn up on forms. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often.
  • The name is closely tied to Francis Xavier and Jesuit history, and to institutions named for him. For many families that lineage is the appeal; for others it is a connection worth knowing about in advance.
