II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Ronin

Masterless samurai; literally "wave person," a wanderer

The Japanese compound 浪人 (rō, wave + nin, person) described a warrior cut loose from his lord's service. In modern Japanese the same word is used for a student studying for another try at university entrance exams — someone between one station and the next.

浪人 (rōnin) → rōnin → Ronin

How it traveled

The word belongs to feudal Japan, where a samurai whose lord had died or fallen from favor became rōnin — no stipend, no house, no place in the order of things. The most famous such men are the forty-seven rōnin of the Akō incident in the early eighteenth century, whose story was retold on the kabuki stage and in print for centuries afterward.

Zaire

the river that swallows all rivers

From Portuguese Zaire, a sixteenth-century rendering of Kikongo nzere or nzadi, a great river, in a phrase describing one that absorbs all others. The reading is the standard account. The country carried the name from 1971 to 1997 and reverted afterwards.

nzadi → Zaire

How it traveled

Portuguese sailors reached the mouth in 1482 and wrote down what they heard, which is how a Kikongo description became a European name. Four and a half centuries later the country's ruler renamed the state, the river and the currency in a campaign of authenticity, replacing the colonial Congo with the older word — which was itself a Portuguese transcription, so the substitution was less clean than it looked.

Out loud, and in short

Ronin

ROH-nin

Stress on the first syllable. Japanese lengthens that first vowel — closer to ROH-oh-neen — but the two-syllable English version is what the name meets in daily use.

  • Ro — The most common informal clip; also serves Rowan, Roman and Roland, so it rarely identifies the full name on its own.
  • Ronny — Informal, and a standalone given name in its own right with a long record among older generations.
  • Nin — A household-level shortening, used inside families more than outside them.

Zaire

zah-EER

Two syllables, stress on the second. zy-EER, with a long first vowel, is also used in American families. French says it with the weight at the end and a lighter first syllable.

  • Zai — The first syllable; used for either child.
  • Z — The initial said aloud; used for either child.

The trade-offs, name by name

Ronin

Strengths

  • Spelled the way it sounds, and short enough that a child can write it early.
  • A word with a documented, traceable meaning in a living language, not a coined form.
  • Recognizable well beyond English, since rōnin has been borrowed into film, fiction and games worldwide.

To consider

  • It is a borrowed word with a specific cultural weight. Japanese speakers hear a masterless warrior — or, in current usage, a student sitting out a year between exam attempts. Worth knowing what the word does in the language it comes from.
  • Ronin, Ronan and Rowan sit within a letter of each other, so expect a lifetime of gentle corrections, especially in writing.
  • Its history as a given name is short, so there are no older bearers to lend it familiarity. In most classrooms it will need introducing once, and then it will be known.

Zaire

Strengths

  • A documented meaning that describes something real and enormous.
  • Two syllables and five letters, with nothing hard in either.
  • It opens with the rarest letter in English, which makes it memorable.

To consider

  • It was a country's name for a quarter of a century and is not now, so the reference has a date on it.
  • The first vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
  • The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
