The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Pierce
rock, stone
Pierce descends from Peter, Greek Petros, 'rock' — the meaning travels intact through the Norman French Piers.
Petros → Petrus → Piers → Pierce
How it traveled
The Greek Petros gave Latin Petrus, and Norman French reshaped it into Piers, which arrived in England after the Conquest and became one of the standard medieval men's names — familiar enough to name the ploughman of the great fourteenth-century English poem. From Piers came the surnames Pierce, Pearce and Pearse, and in Ireland the Gaelic Piarás produced its own family names of the same stock.
Zaire
the river that swallows all rivers
From Portuguese Zaire, a sixteenth-century rendering of Kikongo nzere or nzadi, a great river, in a phrase describing one that absorbs all others. The reading is the standard account. The country carried the name from 1971 to 1997 and reverted afterwards.
nzadi → Zaire
How it traveled
Portuguese sailors reached the mouth in 1482 and wrote down what they heard, which is how a Kikongo description became a European name. Four and a half centuries later the country's ruler renamed the state, the river and the currency in a campaign of authenticity, replacing the colonial Congo with the older word — which was itself a Portuguese transcription, so the substitution was less clean than it looked.

Out loud, and in short
Pierce
PEERSS
Said exactly like the English verb pierce, one syllable. Rhymes with fierce.
- Piers — The older English form of the same name; used as a full given name in its own right rather than as a casual short form.
- P — Initial-only, informal, mostly within families and among teammates — Pierce is a single syllable and offers little else to trim.
Zaire
zah-EER
Two syllables, stress on the second. zy-EER, with a long first vowel, is also used in American families. French says it with the weight at the end and a lighter first syllable.
- Zai — The first syllable; used for either child.
- Z — The initial said aloud; used for either child.

The trade-offs, name by name
Pierce
Strengths
- Spelled the way it sounds, because it matches an ordinary English word — most people can write it after hearing it once.
- A single crisp syllable, which sits easily in front of longer or multi-syllable surnames.
- Documented in an unbroken line back to Peter, with cognates in French, Spanish, Italian and Irish.
To consider
- It is also the English verb, and children find that quickly — expect some wordplay about piercings during the school years. It tends to pass once the name is simply his.
- Pearce, Pearse and Piers are all real spellings of the same stock, so he will occasionally be written down as one of the others.
- It reads strongly as a surname, and forms that ask for last-name-first are a common place for the mix-up.
Zaire
Strengths
- A documented meaning that describes something real and enormous.
- Two syllables and five letters, with nothing hard in either.
- It opens with the rarest letter in English, which makes it memorable.
To consider
- It was a country's name for a quarter of a century and is not now, so the reference has a date on it.
- The first vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
- The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
