Where each name comes from
Raymond
counsel and protection
The two Germanic halves are among the commonest in the whole name stock: the first appears in Reginald and Ronald, the second in Edmund and Sigmund. The compound reached English through Norman French rather than directly.
Raginmund → Raimund → Raymond
How it traveled
Ramon Llull was a Mallorcan nobleman who abandoned court life in the thirteenth century, learned Arabic, and set out to prove Christianity to Muslim scholars by argument rather than force. To do it he built the Ars Magna: a set of concentric paper wheels lettered with basic concepts, which could be rotated to produce every possible combination of them.
Zander
defender of men, through Alexander
Zander inherits its meaning from Alexander, Greek Alexandros, from alexein 'to defend' and andros 'of man'. Two separate coincidences are worth knowing: Zander is also a German and Dutch surname, and the ordinary German word for the pike-perch, a freshwater fish.
Alexandros → Alexander → Sander → Xander → Zander
How it traveled
Alexandros was Greek, carried by Macedonian kings and then by so many saints, popes and emperors that it reached nearly every language in Europe. Dutch, Danish and Norwegian speakers wore it down from the back end to Sander; English speakers clipped it to Xander, which spread further after a character of that name appeared in American television in the late 1990s.

Out loud, and in short
Raymond
RAY-mund
Two syllables with the weight at the front. French says ray-MOHN with the final consonant silent, and Spanish rah-MOHN.
- Ray — The standard short form; a standing name of its own and often given without the long name behind it.
- Ramon — The Spanish and Catalan form, used as a familiar name in bilingual families.
- Raymie — An affectionate form used inside families.
Zander
ZAN-der
Two syllables, stress on the first, rhyming with 'candor'. The Z removes the hesitation some readers have with the Xander spelling.
- Z — Informal, mostly from friends and teammates.
- Zan — A further shortening, used mainly within families.
- Alexander — Works in reverse: many boys registered as Alexander go by Zander every day, so the formal option is available if it is on the birth certificate.

The trade-offs, name by name
Raymond
Strengths
- It has a form in every western European language and is recognized across all of them.
- Ray is one of the most established short forms in English and stands alone as a name.
- It has a documented history running from the Franks through medieval Spain to the present.
To consider
- It is strongly associated with the first half of the twentieth century in America.
- One long-running sitcom title has attached itself for a whole generation.
- The spelling is recorded for a small number of girls, though it reads overwhelmingly as a boy's name.
Zander
Strengths
- Spelled the way it sounds — the Z leaves no room for the guesswork that the X version invites.
- Sits inside the Alexander family, so relatives who have never met the short form still recognize where it comes from.
- Related forms exist across Dutch, Scandinavian, Greek, Italian and Russian, which helps in multilingual families.
To consider
- Zander and Xander will be confused for life. Expect to spell it on forms, and expect some people who know Alexander well to reach for the X out of habit.
- It is a short form functioning as a full name. If you want a longer version available for a diploma or a job application, registering Alexander and using Zander gives you both.
- In German, Zander is an everyday word for a fish served in restaurants — harmless, but German-speaking relatives will notice.
