The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Kennedi
from Irish Ó Cinnéide, built on ceann, "head"
The first element, ceann ("head"), is not in doubt. The second is read two ways: éidigh, "grim" or "ugly", giving "grim-headed", and an older tradition rendering it "helmeted head". Both are serious; neither has pushed the other out.
Cennétig → Ó Cinnéide → Kennedy → Kennedi
How it traveled
The root is the medieval Irish personal name Cennétig, recorded in Munster, which hardened into the family name Ó Cinnéide and then into English as Kennedy. Irish emigration carried it across the Atlantic in the nineteenth century, where — as happened to Ryan, Casey and Riley — the surname loosened and began to be given as a first name.
Khaleesi
queen — the wife of a khal, in the invented Dothraki language
In the source it is a title rather than a personal name. The word appears in Martin's novels, and the Dothraki language around it was expanded for television by the linguist David J. Peterson. Its shape echoes the real steppe title khan, though no line of descent from it is documented.
khal (Dothraki title for a leader) → khaleesi (his wife) → Khaleesi (given name)
How it traveled
The word was coined for fiction, not inherited from any spoken language: in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, a khal leads a Dothraki horde and his wife is his khaleesi. The novels gave the word its meaning; the HBO adaptation gave it a pronunciation heard by millions, and that is the moment it crossed from vocabulary into a name given to real children.

Out loud, and in short
Kennedi
KEN-uh-dee
Stress on the first syllable, the middle one very light. The -i ending does not change the sound: it is said exactly like the surname Kennedy.
- Kenni — Informal, and the short form that keeps the parent spelling's final -i.
- Kenna — Informal; also stands on its own as a given name in US records.
- Ken — Very short and informal; more often heard as a man's name in its own right.
- Kenny — Informal and family-level; likewise established as a standalone name, usually masculine.
Khaleesi
kuh-LEE-see
The television series established this pronunciation, and it is the one most Americans will reach for. A first-syllable stress, KHA-lee-see, is also heard. The kh is pronounced as a plain k in English.
- Leesi — The back half, used informally; also written Leesee or Lisi.
- Khali — Informal short form from the first two syllables; sometimes spelled Kali or Khaley.
- Lee — A one-syllable option that also stands alone as a given name and surname in English.
- Essie — Pulled from the middle of the name; an older English pet form in its own right.
- Also Kiki.

The trade-offs, name by name
Kennedi
Strengths
- Needs no pronunciation help — the sound is familiar to essentially every English speaker, even where the spelling is not.
- Carries a documented Irish line back to a medieval personal name, which few modern respellings can claim.
- Several usable short forms, including Kenni and Kenna.
To consider
- Kennedy is the default spelling, so this version will be corrected and re-corrected for life. Worth deciding now whether you are content to spell it out at every appointment.
- The name is inseparable from the American political family for many people, which some parents like and others would rather avoid.
- The -i ending places the name firmly in a recent naming fashion, and it is easing back from its high point — it may read as of its moment rather than timeless.
Khaleesi
Strengths
- Its spelling and pronunciation are already known to anyone familiar with the books or the series, so most people get it right on the first hearing.
- A child with this name will almost certainly be the only one wherever she goes, without the name being unpronounceable.
- Three syllables with a clear middle stress give it several natural short forms: Leesi, Khali, Lee.
To consider
- The name arrives with the whole story attached, including everything that happens to the character it belongs to. Some people will bring that up; a child will hear the reference explained to her many times.
- In the books it is a title, not a name — closer to "queen" than to "Daenerys". Readers who know the source sometimes make a point of this.
- Expect to spell it. Khaleesi, Kaleesi and Khalessi all circulate, and the silent-h opening is easy to mishear.
