Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Kali
"the black one" or "she of time" in Sanskrit — or "beautiful, good" by way of Greek
Two separate origins meet at this spelling. In Sanskrit, Kālī is the feminine of kāla, a word meaning both "black, dark" and "time" — both readings are ancient and both are taken seriously. In American use, Kali is also a respelling of Callie and Cali, which trace back through Greek names built on kalos/kalli-, "beautiful, good." Which meaning a given Kali carries depends entirely on the family.
kāla (Sanskrit, "black; time") → Kālī → Kali
How it traveled
The Sanskrit Kālī is documented in Hindu scripture, most famously in the Devī Māhātmya, a text of roughly the sixth century CE, where she appears as a fierce form of the goddess; the name has been in continuous religious use in India ever since. The English-speaking road is much shorter and quite separate: Callie began as a pet form of Caroline, Calista and similar names, and by the mid-twentieth century American parents were writing that sound with a K, alongside Kayla, Kaylee and Kaleigh.
Nina
Several roots: 'little girl' in Spanish, or a pet form of longer names ending in -nina
Three lines feed the same spelling. In Spanish, niña means 'little girl'. In Italian and the Slavic languages, Nina began as a clipping of longer names — Antonina, Giovannina, Yanina — where the final syllables were kept and the rest dropped. In Russian it is also the standard form of the Georgian name Nino, whose own meaning is not established. None of these cancels the others out; a given family may be drawing on any one of them.
Antonina → Nina
How it traveled
The shortest path to Nina runs through Italy and the Slavic-speaking world, where long names were routinely trimmed from the end rather than the front: Antonina and Giovannina gave Nina, much as Alessandra gave Sandra. Spanish supplied a second, independent route through niña, the ordinary word for a girl child.

Out loud, and in short
Kali
KAL-ee (also KAH-lee)
Two pronunciations circulate. English-speaking families most often say KAL-ee, rhyming with Sally; the Sanskrit name is KAH-lee, with a long first vowel. Both are correct — it is worth deciding which one you mean, since people will guess.
- Kal — Informal clipping; also used for boys as a short form of Kalvin and Kalen.
- Kals — Casual, friends-and-siblings register rather than family use.
- Kali-Jo / Kali-Anne — Double-barrelled expansions, most common in the South.
Nina
NEE-nah
NEE-nah is standard in English and matches the Italian, Spanish, Slavic and Georgian pronunciations. A minority of English speakers, mostly of older generations, say NY-nah; if that is the version you want, expect to correct people.
- Nini — Household use; Nina is already short, so most pet forms stay inside the family.
- Ninou — French affectionate form, common where the name charts in France.
- Nins — Informal, mostly among friends and siblings rather than adults.

The trade-offs, name by name
Kali
Strengths
- Short and phonetic: four letters, two syllables, readable on sight in most languages.
- The spelling is already familiar to English speakers through Cali and Callie, so it rarely needs to be spelled out twice.
- A documented history in Sanskrit going back well over a thousand years, still in living religious use.
To consider
- Kālī is a major Hindu goddess, and for many people worldwide that association comes first. Some Hindu families consider it a sacred name rather than an everyday one; others give it with pride. Worth knowing which conversation you may be having.
- Kali, Callie, Cali, Kallie and Kaleigh all sound alike, so expect a lifetime of gentle spelling corrections — and of being written down as Cali, which reads to many Americans as California.
- The two pronunciations, KAL-ee and KAH-lee, will both be offered to your daughter by strangers. Most children settle this themselves early and without fuss.
Nina
Strengths
- Spelled the way it sounds in English, and spelled the same way in Italian, Spanish, Polish, Russian transliteration and German.
- Two syllables, four letters, no silent letters or double consonants to explain.
- Unbroken presence in American records since the earliest years of the national data, without a fashion spike attached to any one decade.
To consider
- The NEE-nah and NY-nah split is real, if lopsided. Most people will say NEE-nah, but you will meet the other version occasionally, usually from older speakers.
- It sits in a crowded sound family — Mina, Gina, Tina, Lena, Nena — so it can be misheard over a phone or in a noisy room.
- In Spanish, niña is an everyday word for a girl child, not only a name. Among Spanish speakers that reads as familiar rather than odd, but it is worth knowing.
