Where each name comes from
Kali
"the black one" or "she of time" in Sanskrit — or "beautiful, good" by way of Greek
Two separate origins meet at this spelling. In Sanskrit, Kālī is the feminine of kāla, a word meaning both "black, dark" and "time" — both readings are ancient and both are taken seriously. In American use, Kali is also a respelling of Callie and Cali, which trace back through Greek names built on kalos/kalli-, "beautiful, good." Which meaning a given Kali carries depends entirely on the family.
kāla (Sanskrit, "black; time") → Kālī → Kali
How it traveled
The Sanskrit Kālī is documented in Hindu scripture, most famously in the Devī Māhātmya, a text of roughly the sixth century CE, where she appears as a fierce form of the goddess; the name has been in continuous religious use in India ever since. The English-speaking road is much shorter and quite separate: Callie began as a pet form of Caroline, Calista and similar names, and by the mid-twentieth century American parents were writing that sound with a K, alongside Kayla, Kaylee and Kaleigh.
Kendall
valley of the River Kent
The main reading traces the name to Kendal in Cumbria, from the river name Kent plus dale, 'valley'. A second reading, also taken seriously by surname scholars, derives it from Welsh pen y ddol, 'head of the meadow or dale'. Both land on much the same picture: a name for someone from a particular valley.
River Kent → Kendal (town in Cumbria) → Kendall (English surname) → Kendall (given name)
How it traveled
Kendal sits where the River Kent runs down out of the Lake District fells, and it gave its name to the families who came from there — Kendall, Kendal, Kendell, spelled however the parish clerk heard it. The town was known across medieval England for its woolen cloth, the 'Kendal green' that Shakespeare put into the mouth of Falstaff in Henry IV.

Out loud, and in short
Kali
KAL-ee (also KAH-lee)
Two pronunciations circulate. English-speaking families most often say KAL-ee, rhyming with Sally; the Sanskrit name is KAH-lee, with a long first vowel. Both are correct — it is worth deciding which one you mean, since people will guess.
- Kal — Informal clipping; also used for boys as a short form of Kalvin and Kalen.
- Kals — Casual, friends-and-siblings register rather than family use.
- Kali-Jo / Kali-Anne — Double-barrelled expansions, most common in the South.
Kendall
KEN-dul
Stress on the first syllable; the second is light, closer to -dul or -dl than a full -dall. The pronunciation is settled and is the same for boys and girls.
- Ken — The most obvious short form; also a long-established standalone given name for men, which is worth knowing before you lean on it.
- Kenny — Informal and affectionate; like Ken, it exists independently as a man's name and is common among older generations.
- Kendy — Family-level nickname, rarely used outside the household.

The trade-offs, name by name
Kali
Strengths
- Short and phonetic: four letters, two syllables, readable on sight in most languages.
- The spelling is already familiar to English speakers through Cali and Callie, so it rarely needs to be spelled out twice.
- A documented history in Sanskrit going back well over a thousand years, still in living religious use.
To consider
- Kālī is a major Hindu goddess, and for many people worldwide that association comes first. Some Hindu families consider it a sacred name rather than an everyday one; others give it with pride. Worth knowing which conversation you may be having.
- Kali, Callie, Cali, Kallie and Kaleigh all sound alike, so expect a lifetime of gentle spelling corrections — and of being written down as Cali, which reads to many Americans as California.
- The two pronunciations, KAL-ee and KAH-lee, will both be offered to your daughter by strangers. Most children settle this themselves early and without fuss.
Kendall
Strengths
- An unbroken presence on US birth records since the early twentieth century — familiar to every generation now living, without ever having been inescapable.
- Reads on sight for English speakers: two syllables, no silent letters, no pronunciation instructions needed.
- Works for a boy or a girl without alteration, as surname-names generally do.
To consider
- Kendal, Kendell and Kendyl all exist, so expect to spell it aloud now and then — though the double-L version is the one people default to.
- Most Kendalls today are girls. A boy will meet the occasional assumption in the other direction, especially on paperwork and class lists.
- The obvious nicknames, Ken and Kenny, are strongly established as men's names in their own right; some families simply skip them and use the full name, which carries fine on its own.
