II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Jovie

Not established

No meaning has been established for Jovie itself; it was not handed down from an older language with a translation attached. What is documented sits nearby: the English word jovial descends from Latin Jovialis, 'of Jupiter' (Jove), and the Latin name Jovita belongs to that same Jove family. Whether the film's writers had any of that in mind is not recorded.

How it traveled

Jovie has no long line behind it, which is unusual enough to be worth saying plainly. Before the film, the sound turns up only occasionally as a pet form of Jov- names — Jovan and Jovana are the Serbian and Macedonian forms of John, and Jovita is a Latin name borne by a second-century martyr of Brescia.

Kate

traditionally read as "pure", though the older root is uncertain

Kate comes from Katherine, and Katherine from the Greek Aikaterine, whose origin has never been settled. From early on the name was associated with Greek katharos, "pure" — that link shaped the Latin spelling Catharina and is the reading most often given. Other scholars trace Aikaterine to the goddess Hekate, or to an unrecoverable pre-Greek word. The "pure" sense is real as tradition, not as proven etymology.

Aikaterine → Catharina → Katherine → Kate

How it traveled

The parent name arrived in the Greek-speaking east and traveled west through the cult of Katherine of Alexandria, becoming Catherine in France, Katharina in the German lands, Caterina in Italy. English speakers clipped it almost immediately, and by the Middle Ages Kate, Kit and Kitty were all doing service for the same long formal name.

Out loud, and in short

Jovie

JOH-vee

Stress on the first syllable, with a long o as in Joe. Some readers reach for JUH-vee on first sight; one correction usually settles it.

  • Jo — The obvious short form, and a given name in its own right with centuries of English use behind it.
  • Jojo — Informal, family-and-playground register; rarely used on paper.
  • Jov — Clipped and casual, mostly spoken rather than written.

Kate

KAYT

One syllable, rhyming with gate. It is pronounced the same in English wherever it is used, and the spelling gives no one any trouble.

  • Katie — The most common affectionate extension; also stands alone as a given name in its own right.
  • Katy — Same form, older spelling; used both as a nickname and independently.
  • Kat — Informal and modern, common among teenagers and adults rather than small children.
  • Kitty — A historical short form of Katherine, occasionally revived; reads as vintage rather than current.
  • Also Katiekins.

The trade-offs, name by name

Jovie

Strengths

  • Two syllables, both made of sounds common in English — easy for a small child to say and to recognize in print early.
  • The short form Jo stands on its own and has a long, unbroken record as an English name, so a formal option and a casual one arrive together.
  • No competing pronunciation in serious circulation once the long o is heard.

To consider

  • The Elf connection is strong and, for many Americans, immediate — it may draw a Christmas-movie remark for years. That fades as the name spreads, but it is worth expecting rather than being surprised by.
  • On paper, Jovie sits close to "juvie", the American slang shortening of juvenile detention. Spoken aloud the stress and the long o keep them apart; in a quick glance at a written list they can blur.
  • Spellings Jovi, Jovey and Jovee all circulate, so expect to confirm the -ie ending fairly often.

Kate

Strengths

  • Instantly spellable and instantly readable — almost no one will need it repeated or clarified.
  • Works as a full legal name or as the short form of Katherine, Katharine or Kathleen, so the choice can stay open.
  • A documented history in English going back to the Middle Ages, with continuous use in US records since they began.

To consider

  • People will often assume it is short for Katherine and ask for the "full" name on forms, at school, at the doctor's office. That is easy to answer but it does keep coming up.
  • At one syllable it can run together with short surnames; saying the whole name aloud a few times is worth doing before you commit.
  • It leaves little room to change register later — there is no long formal version to grow into unless you choose one on the birth certificate.
