The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Jonas
Dove
From Hebrew yonah, the bird. The prophet of the Book of Jonah carries it; Greek-speaking translators rendered it Iōnas, and Latin passed that on as Jonas.
Yonah → Iōnas → Jonas → Jonah
How it traveled
The name begins as Yonah in Hebrew, borne by the prophet who fled to sea and was swallowed by a great fish. When the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek, Yonah became Iōnas, and Latin kept it as Jonas — which is why early English Bibles, including the King James, print Jonas rather than Jonah in the New Testament.
Kolter
colt keeper, or plow blade (competing surname readings)
Kolter is the surname Colter with a K. The surname itself has two documented roads: an occupational name for a keeper of colts, and a variant of Coulter, from the iron blade of a plow — ultimately the Latin culter, a knife. Family by family, either could be the true line, and for a first-name Kolter the meaning is best held lightly.
Colter (English surname) → Kolter
How it traveled
Colter earned its American fame as a frontier surname: John Colter, a scout of the Lewis and Clark expedition, wandered alone into the Yellowstone country and came back with reports nobody believed. That gave the name a permanent outdoors register, and its strongest ground today — ranch country from Texas up through Oklahoma and Utah — fits that register exactly.

Out loud, and in short
Jonas
JOH-nus
Standard American English puts the stress on the first syllable. In German, Swedish and Lithuanian the J is a Y sound and the second syllable keeps its vowel: YOH-nahs. Both are correct in their own places, and families with European ties often use the second.
- Jo — The common short form in German and Scandinavian use; works the same way in English, and stands alone as a given name of its own.
- Joe — The English-spelled equivalent, informal, and independently a full given name for men of every generation.
- Jonny — Informal and playground-level; borrowed from Jonathan and John, so it points away from the full name rather than toward it.
- Jonesy — Surname-style and teasing, used mostly among friends and teammates rather than by family.
Kolter
KOHL-ter
Two syllables, the first like coal.
- Kolt — The ready-made short; as Colt it is a full given name in its own right.

The trade-offs, name by name
Jonas
Strengths
- Spelled the way it sounds in English, with no silent letters and no fork in the road for a listener writing it down.
- In continuous use across German, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, French, Portuguese and Lithuanian, so it crosses borders without needing translation.
- A documented history running from the Hebrew Bible through Greek and Latin scripture into modern Europe.
To consider
- Jonas and Jonah are constantly mistaken for each other in the US, since both are current and both trace to the same prophet. Expect to spell it fairly often, and to correct the occasional Jonah in writing.
- The final s makes possessives and plurals slightly clumsy — Jonas's book, the Jonas family — which is a minor lifelong friction rather than a real problem.
- The Jonas Brothers made the name widely recognized as a surname, and some people will hear it that way first. That association has been fading with time.
Kolter
Strengths
- Comes with Kolt built in.
- Familiar through Colt and Colton, so the sound needs no teaching.
- The K-spelling makes it distinctive on paper without changing the sound.
To consider
- He will spend his life saying 'with a K' — Colter and Coulter are the default guesses.
- It sits in a crowded sound family — Colt, Colton, Kolton — that blurs in a classroom.
- The name is young; there are few adult Kolters yet to show how it carries into a boardroom.
