Where each name comes from
Isaac
He laughs, or he will laugh
The Hebrew Yitzhak is built on the root ts-h-q, to laugh; Genesis ties the name directly to Sarah's laughter at the promise of a son.
Yitzhak → Isaak → Isaac
How it traveled
The name is Hebrew, Yitzhak, borne in the Book of Genesis by the son of Abraham and Sarah. The Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible wrote it Isaak, Latin took it as Isaac, and that Latin spelling is the one English has kept.
Isaiah
the Lord is salvation
From the Hebrew Yesha'yahu, joining a verb meaning to save or deliver to a short form of the divine name. The -iah ending appears across a whole family of prophetic names — Jeremiah, Zechariah, Obadiah, Nehemiah — and it is the same divine element every time, which is why they rhyme.
Yesha'yahu → Esaias → Isaiah
How it traveled
The book is long, and scholars have argued since the eighteenth century that it is the work of more than one hand: the first thirty-nine chapters belong to Jerusalem in the eighth century before the common era, and the material from chapter forty onward addresses people already in exile in Babylon, two hundred years later. That is not a modern skepticism so much as an observation about who the text speaks to.

Out loud, and in short
Isaac
EYE-zik
Standard in American English. Spanish and French speakers say roughly ee-SAHK or ee-ZAHK, and the Hebrew Yitzhak sounds quite different again — worth knowing if the family spans more than one language.
- Ike — The long-established English short form, informal, and used as a standalone name in earlier generations.
- Izzy — Informal and current; also serves Isaiah, Isabella and Isadora, so it is shared territory.
- Zac — Informal, drawn from the second syllable; overlaps with Zachary.
- Ikey — An older diminutive, rarely heard now.
Isaiah
eye-ZAY-uh
Three syllables, stress in the middle. Spanish says Isaías with four and the weight at the end. The h at the end of the English spelling is silent and represents the Hebrew consonant that closes the divine name.
- Zay — Taken from the middle of the name, which is unusual; it is now a standing name of its own and by far the commonest everyday form.
- Izzy — Older and gentler, shared with Isaac and Isabel; warm and fully unisex.
- Isa — The front of the name, which is also the Arabic name for Jesus; short and used in some families as a formal short form.
One short form, two names
- Isaac and Isaiah both shorten to Izzy.

The trade-offs, name by name
Isaac
Strengths
- A spelling almost everyone already knows on sight, with no competing variants to explain.
- Documented in continuous use for millennia, and it has never had to be revived.
- Works across borders: it charts in France, Canada, England and Wales, and Scotland, and needs no translation in Spanish or Portuguese.
To consider
- Isaac and Isaiah are constantly mistaken for each other, and Issac is a very common transposition in writing. Expect to correct both.
- The biblical story is inseparable from the name. That is a pleasure for some families and a consideration for others.
- Izzy is shared with several popular girls' names, so if that is the nickname you love, it will not be his alone.
Isaiah
Strengths
- It has been in continuous use for something close to three thousand years.
- Zay is a genuinely modern short form and Izzy an old one, so a boy has range.
- It is recognized in Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike.
To consider
- It has been very heavily used in the last two decades, so a boy will meet others of his age.
- Isaias, Izaiah and Isiah all appear in American records, so the spelling is asked for more often than the standard version suggests.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy; the record's girls are very few.
