The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Ian

"Yahweh is gracious"

Ian carries the meaning of John, from the Hebrew name Yohanan.

Yohanan → Ioannes → Iohannes → Iain → Ian

How it traveled

The Hebrew Yohanan passed into Greek as Ioannes and into Latin as Iohannes, from which nearly every European form of John descends. In Scottish Gaelic it settled as Iain, and Ian is that Gaelic name written for English speakers.

Isaiah

the Lord is salvation

From the Hebrew Yesha'yahu, joining a verb meaning to save or deliver to a short form of the divine name. The -iah ending appears across a whole family of prophetic names — Jeremiah, Zechariah, Obadiah, Nehemiah — and it is the same divine element every time, which is why they rhyme.

Yesha'yahu → Esaias → Isaiah

How it traveled

The book is long, and scholars have argued since the eighteenth century that it is the work of more than one hand: the first thirty-nine chapters belong to Jerusalem in the eighth century before the common era, and the material from chapter forty onward addresses people already in exile in Babylon, two hundred years later. That is not a modern skepticism so much as an observation about who the text speaks to.

Out loud, and in short

Ian

EE-un

Two syllables, stress on the first. A first-time reader occasionally tries EYE-an, and some bearers in the US answer to that quite happily; the Scottish pronunciation is EE-un.

Isaiah

eye-ZAY-uh

Three syllables, stress in the middle. Spanish says Isaías with four and the weight at the end. The h at the end of the English spelling is silent and represents the Hebrew consonant that closes the divine name.

  • Zay — Taken from the middle of the name, which is unusual; it is now a standing name of its own and by far the commonest everyday form.
  • Izzy — Older and gentler, shared with Isaac and Isabel; warm and fully unisex.
  • Isa — The front of the name, which is also the Arabic name for Jesus; short and used in some families as a formal short form.

The trade-offs, name by name

Ian

Strengths

  • Short, spelled as it sounds, and hard to misspell once heard — three letters with no silent parts.
  • Belongs to the John family, so it has recognizable cousins in most European languages: Iain, Eoin, Ioan, Ivan, Juan.
  • A documented line running from Hebrew through Greek and Latin to Gaelic, with no gaps to guess at.

To consider

  • It is already about as short as a name gets, so there is no built-in nickname. Anyone wanting one usually invents it.
  • The Gaelic spelling Iain and the pronunciation EYE-an both circulate, so expect an occasional check on which you mean.
  • Written quickly by hand, Ian can be read as lan or Jan — a small, lifelong annoyance rather than a real problem.

Isaiah

Strengths

  • It has been in continuous use for something close to three thousand years.
  • Zay is a genuinely modern short form and Izzy an old one, so a boy has range.
  • It is recognized in Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike.

To consider

  • It has been very heavily used in the last two decades, so a boy will meet others of his age.
  • Isaias, Izaiah and Isiah all appear in American records, so the spelling is asked for more often than the standard version suggests.
  • Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy; the record's girls are very few.
