Where each name comes from
Dahlia
The dahlia flower; through the surname Dahl, ultimately 'valley'
The Spanish botanist Antonio José Cavanilles named the genus Dahlia in 1791 in honor of Anders Dahl, whose surname comes from the Scandinavian word for a valley. A separate name meets this spelling from another direction: Hebrew Dalia, a branch or vine tendril, and Lithuanian Dalia, a portion or fate. Parents who spell it Dahlia are usually reaching for the flower.
dal — Old Norse 'valley' → Dahl — Scandinavian surname → Dahlia — botanical genus, named 1791 → Dahlia — given name
How it traveled
The plant was grown in the valley of Mexico centuries before Europeans saw it, and it traveled to Spain at the end of the eighteenth century, where it was named for a Swedish botanist who had died only a year or two earlier. From the botanical name it passed into ordinary English as a garden word, and from there into the nineteenth-century habit of naming girls Violet, Rose, Iris and Lily.
Delaney
Either "descendant of Dubhshláine" (Irish: dubh, dark or black, plus Sláine) or "of the alder grove" (Norman French)
Two serious lines meet at this spelling. The Gaelic surname Ó Dubhshláine breaks into dubh, "black" or "dark", and Sláine — read either as a personal name or as the River Slaney. Separately, Anglo-Norman families in Ireland bore de l'Aunaie, "from the alder grove", which anglicized to Delaney and Delany too. Both are well attested; genealogists do not agree on which family carried which.
Dubhshláine → Ó Dubhshláine → Delany → Delaney
How it traveled
The name belongs first to Ireland, where Ó Dubhshláine was a sept of the midlands, concentrated around the borders of Laois and Kilkenny. Norman settlers who arrived after the twelfth century brought the separate name de l'Aunaie, and over centuries of anglicization the two collapsed into the same handful of spellings — Delany, Delaney, Delahunty nearby.

Out loud, and in short
Dahlia
DAL-yuh
American speakers say DAL-yuh or DAHL-yuh. British and Australian speakers usually say DAY-lee-uh for the flower, and Spanish speakers say DAH-lee-ah. All are correct for the word; you get to pick which one is the child's.
- Dahl — The bare first syllable; informal, and doubles as a real Scandinavian surname.
- Lia — Taken from the end of the name; also stands alone as a given name in Italian and German use.
- Dolly — Informal and playful rather than an obvious clip; used by family more than by classmates.
- Dee — Initial-based and neutral in tone; works on a roster or a name tag.
Delaney
duh-LAY-nee
Stress on the middle syllable. Spelling and sound line up cleanly in English, so it rarely needs repeating — though the first syllable is often flattened to DEL-a-nee in casual speech.
- Laney — The most common short form, and a given name in its own right on US records.
- Del — Informal and clipped; used across ages and genders.
- Dee — Informal, initial-based, easy for young children to say.
- Lane — Informal; also stands alone as a given name for boys and girls.
- Also Della.

The trade-offs, name by name
Dahlia
Strengths
- Everyone already knows the word, so it is heard correctly the first time even when the spelling has to be repeated.
- Works in English and Spanish with only a small shift in stress, which matters in the states where it is most used.
- A parallel name, Hebrew and Lithuanian Dalia, gives it a second set of communities where it is familiar.
To consider
- The pronunciation genuinely splits: DAL-yuh, DAHL-yuh and DAY-lee-uh are all in use. She will correct people occasionally, and it is worth deciding which one you mean before the birth announcement.
- The silent h is easy to lose. Expect Dalia, Dalya and Daliah on forms, and a lifetime of spelling it out once.
- The 1947 Los Angeles murder case known as the Black Dahlia still attracts films and books. It attaches to the phrase rather than the name, and most people meet the flower first, but it exists.
Delaney
Strengths
- Spelling and pronunciation match, so most English speakers get it right on the first reading and the first hearing.
- Comes with ready-made short forms — Laney, Del, Dee — none of which need inventing.
- A documented surname for many centuries in Ireland, which gives it a long record behind a modern-sounding first name.
To consider
- It still reads as a surname to many people, so expect it to be occasionally taken as a last name on forms, rosters and introductions.
- Delaney and Delany both have real history, which means the second E gets dropped and re-added by other people for life.
- In the United States it is now given almost entirely to girls, though the underlying surname carries no gender at all — worth knowing if you were considering it for a son.
