II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Ariana

"most holy" — or, by a separate route, connected to Persian arya, "noble"

Read as a form of Arianna and Ariadne, the Greek name is generally traced to an intensive ari- plus a Cretan form of hagnos, "holy" — hence "most holy". Separately, Ariana is also used in Persian- and Dari-speaking families, where it echoes Ariana, the old Greek geographical name for the eastern Iranian lands, tied to arya, "noble". Two genuine roads meet at the same spelling.

Ariadne → Ariadna → Arianna → Ariana

How it traveled

The oldest layer is Greek: Ariadne appears in myth as the daughter of King Minos, the one with the thread, and her name is recorded in Greek from antiquity onward. Latin carried it to Ariadna, and Italian softened it into Arianna, the form still ordinary in Italy today; Spanish kept Ariadna, French made Ariane.

Valerie

to be strong; to be in good health

The Roman family name is built on the verb valere, to be strong or well, which also gives English valid, value, valor, convalesce and the farewell vale. The name is an assertion about the family rather than a description of a person.

Valerius → Valeria → Valérie → Valerie

How it traveled

Valerian was captured by the Persian king Shapur in the third century, and he is the only Roman emperor ever taken alive by a foreign enemy. What happened to him afterwards is disputed — Roman sources, written by people with reasons to make it worse, say he was used as a footstool for mounting a horse and eventually flayed and stuffed; Persian sources say nothing of the kind and imply he was held in reasonable conditions with his captured soldiers put to work building a dam in Khuzestan that is still standing.

Out loud, and in short

Ariana

ar-ee-AH-nuh

Also heard as air-ee-AH-nuh, and some families say ar-ee-AN-uh with a flat middle vowel. All three are in real use, so expect to state your preference once at the start of each school year.

  • Ari — The everyday short form, and a given name in its own right for both girls and boys.
  • Aria — Used informally, and independently popular as a full given name, which can cause mix-ups.
  • Anna — Drawn from the middle of the name; more traditional in Italian-speaking families.
  • Ria — Less common in the US, familiar in European usage.
  • Also Nana.

Valerie

VAL-uh-ree

Three syllables with the stress at the front in English. French puts an accent on the second e and stresses the last syllable, so the French and English versions of the same spelling sound quite different.

  • Val — The front of the name, and a familiar form for either sex.
  • Vallie — The affectionate form, built on the same front.
  • Lerie — Cut from the back, which sounds unrelated to the whole.

The trade-offs, name by name

Ariana

Strengths

  • Two established short forms, Ari and Aria, both of which also work as standalone names.
  • A documented line running from Greek myth through Latin, Italian, Spanish and French — a very long unbroken record.
  • Recognized on sight in Italian-, Spanish- and Persian-speaking families, with a spelling close to how each pronounces it.

To consider

  • Arianna, Ariana and Aryana are all in genuine use, so the name will be respelled by strangers regularly. Choosing the one-n version means a lifetime of "one n or two?"
  • For one generation of Americans the name is closely tied to a single very famous singer. That association is strong now and will loosen with time, but it is worth knowing it exists.
  • The stress and the middle vowel vary between speakers, so the correction will be small and frequent rather than dramatic.

Valerie

Strengths

  • Val comes off it at once and works in any setting.
  • The meaning is documented and positive without being abstract.
  • It exists across most of Europe, so it travels without being rebuilt.

To consider

  • It has been common for several decades, so a classroom may hold more than one.
  • Valarie and Valeri are both recorded and will be written for it.
  • The French original stresses it differently, which matters in a bilingual family.
