The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Amira
"Princess" in Arabic; "treetop" or "utterance" in Hebrew
Two separate names share this spelling. The Arabic أميرة is the feminine of amīr, "prince, commander" — the same root that gives English emir and the name of the United Arab Emirates. The Hebrew אֲמִירָה comes from a root meaning both the topmost bough of a tree and the act of saying something. Neither reading is a variant of the other; which one applies depends on the family.
amīr (Arabic, "commander, prince") → amīra → Amira / Ameera / Amirah
How it traveled
The Arabic line is the older and wider one: from the root ʼ-m-r, "to command," comes amīr, the title borne by commanders and princes across the medieval Islamic world, and from it the feminine amīra. The word traveled into European languages as emir long before the name did, so English speakers already knew the sound in another shape.
Ariana
"most holy" — or, by a separate route, connected to Persian arya, "noble"
Read as a form of Arianna and Ariadne, the Greek name is generally traced to an intensive ari- plus a Cretan form of hagnos, "holy" — hence "most holy". Separately, Ariana is also used in Persian- and Dari-speaking families, where it echoes Ariana, the old Greek geographical name for the eastern Iranian lands, tied to arya, "noble". Two genuine roads meet at the same spelling.
Ariadne → Ariadna → Arianna → Ariana
How it traveled
The oldest layer is Greek: Ariadne appears in myth as the daughter of King Minos, the one with the thread, and her name is recorded in Greek from antiquity onward. Latin carried it to Ariadna, and Italian softened it into Arianna, the form still ordinary in Italy today; Spanish kept Ariadna, French made Ariane.

Out loud, and in short
Amira
uh-MEER-uh
Stress on the middle syllable. Arabic and Bosnian speakers often say it closer to ah-MEE-rah, with a fuller first and final vowel; both are the same name, and English speakers usually manage it on the first hearing.
- Mira — The most common short form, and a full given name in its own right in several languages.
- Mimi — Informal, family-side; rarely used outside the household.
- Ami — Informal; spelled Ami or Amy depending on the family's preference.
- Ria — Informal short form taken from the ending; also stands alone as a name in Dutch and Indonesian.
Ariana
ar-ee-AH-nuh
Also heard as air-ee-AH-nuh, and some families say ar-ee-AN-uh with a flat middle vowel. All three are in real use, so expect to state your preference once at the start of each school year.
- Ari — The everyday short form, and a given name in its own right for both girls and boys.
- Aria — Used informally, and independently popular as a full given name, which can cause mix-ups.
- Anna — Drawn from the middle of the name; more traditional in Italian-speaking families.
- Ria — Less common in the US, familiar in European usage.
- Also Nana.

The trade-offs, name by name
Amira
Strengths
- Works in Arabic, Bosnian, Hebrew and English without translation or reshaping — one spelling that travels across several languages.
- Reads correctly from the page for most English speakers on first sight, with no silent letters and no ambiguous consonants.
- Has ready-made short forms: Mira for everyday use, Mimi and Ami within the family.
To consider
- Ameera, Amirah and Amyra all circulate, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often. Picking one form early and sticking to it saves the most trouble.
- It is on a clear upward path in the US, so a child born now will likely meet more Amiras as a teenager than as a toddler.
- The sound sits close to Amara, Almira, Samira and Mira, and mix-ups among those are the usual small annoyance rather than anything worse.
Ariana
Strengths
- Two established short forms, Ari and Aria, both of which also work as standalone names.
- A documented line running from Greek myth through Latin, Italian, Spanish and French — a very long unbroken record.
- Recognized on sight in Italian-, Spanish- and Persian-speaking families, with a spelling close to how each pronounces it.
To consider
- Arianna, Ariana and Aryana are all in genuine use, so the name will be respelled by strangers regularly. Choosing the one-n version means a lifetime of "one n or two?"
- For one generation of Americans the name is closely tied to a single very famous singer. That association is strong now and will loosen with time, but it is worth knowing it exists.
- The stress and the middle vowel vary between speakers, so the correction will be small and frequent rather than dramatic.
