Where each name comes from
Analeia
Not established
No meaning has been established for this spelling. What is documented is the first element: Ana, the Spanish and Portuguese form of Anna, which comes through Greek from Hebrew Channah, 'grace' or 'favor'. Spanish-speaking countries also have the older compound name Analía, built from Ana and Lía. How Analeia relates to either is not recorded, so the honest answer is that its meaning is open.
Our story of Analeia — where the record runs out
Some names arrive without paperwork. Analeia appears in the American record only recently, and it appears first in the states where Spanish and English are spoken in the same kitchens — so the story we tell is one of a meeting.
Faye
fairy (from Middle English fay)
Faye is usually traced to fay, 'fairy,' which came into English from Old French fae. It has also been used as a short form of Faith, and the two roads arrive at the same spelling.
fata (Latin) → fae (Old French) → fay (Middle English) → Faye
How it traveled
Fay came into English from Old French in the Middle Ages, and the spelling Faye grew up beside it as a given name. It is easy to confuse with fey, but the two words are unrelated: fey comes from Old English fæge, 'doomed to die,' and drifted toward 'otherworldly' only much later, partly under the pull of fay.
Where a reading is contested the note says so — this page does not turn a guess into a fact. The chain is each name's recorded forms, oldest first; the story is its opening, told in full on the name's own page.
Out loud, and in short
Analeia
ah-nah-LAY-ah
You will also hear ah-nah-LEE-ah, closer to Spanish Analía. Neither is wrong; the family decides, and both survive an English-speaking mouth without trouble.
- Ana — The most obvious short form, and a complete given name in its own right across Spanish, Portuguese and much of Europe.
- Leia — Taken from the back half; also stands alone as a given name in US records.
- Ani — Informal, family-level; also used as a short form of Anahí and Anaïs.
- Lia — Informal, and an independent given name in Italian and Spanish.
Faye
FAY
One syllable, rhyming with day; the final e is silent.

The trade-offs, name by name
Analeia
Strengths
- Built on Ana, a name recognized on sight in nearly every European and Latin American language — the first half never needs explaining.
- Reads and sounds out the same in English and Spanish, which matters in a bilingual family.
- Several ready-made short forms — Ana, Leia, Ani, Lia — each of which already works as a name on its own.
To consider
- The spelling competes with Analia, Analía, Annalia, Anaya-adjacent forms and Analeah, so she will be spelling it out at appointments and correcting autocorrect for life.
- Two live pronunciations — LAY and LEE in the third syllable — means the correction will come up as often as the spelling does.
- It is a very young name, so there are no grown Analeias to point to and no long track record to lean on; the family will be setting the precedent rather than following one.
Faye
Strengths
- One syllable, said the same way by every English speaker.
- Works as a first name or as a short middle name between longer ones.
- An old English word and a famous actress stand behind it.
To consider
- It will be spelled Fay or Fae as often as Faye, so expect to spell it out.
- It sounds exactly like fey, a word now meaning whimsical or otherworldly, and a few people will make the link.
- A very few boys are recorded with it; as a name long given to girls, it will read as feminine.
