Where each name comes from
Anahi
No single settled meaning — a legend's name, and separately linked to Anahita, 'immaculate, pure'
In the Guaraní legend, Anahí is a person, not a translation: the name arrives attached to a story about the ceibo tree rather than to a dictionary entry, though it is often glossed loosely as a flower name. A separate line connects the spelling to Anahita, the Old Iranian goddess of the waters, whose name comes from anāhita, 'immaculate, undefiled' — the source of Armenian Anahit. Both readings are seriously held, and they do not reduce to one another.
Anahí → Anahi
How it traveled
The name's oldest thread is the Guaraní legend of Anahí, told in the Río de la Paraná region: a young woman who defends her people, is burned, and becomes the ceibo — the tree whose scarlet blossom is now the national flower of Argentina and Uruguay. From that story the name spread as an ordinary given name across Spanish-speaking South America, and later through Mexico, where Spanish-language pop and telenovela stardom in the 2000s gave it a fresh burst of visibility.
Saige
wise; also the herb sage
English has two separate words spelled sage, and the name sits on both. The adjective meaning wise came through Old French from Latin sapere, to be wise; the grey-green herb came through Old French sauge from Latin salvia, related to salvus, healthy. Name references usually give "wise one," with the herb close behind.
sapere (Latin, to be wise) → sage (Old French) → sage (English word) → Sage → Saige
How it traveled
Sage entered English from Old French in the medieval period, in two senses at once: the herb grown for cooking and medicine, and the adjective for a person of settled judgment. As a first name it belongs to the modern English-speaking taste for plain nouns — words lifted straight out of the dictionary and handed to children.

Out loud, and in short
Anahi
ah-nah-EE
In Spanish the h is silent and the stress falls on the final syllable — the accented spelling Anahí marks it. English speakers commonly say uh-NAH-hee instead, sounding the h and moving the stress. Both are heard in the US, and many families answer to either.
- Ana — The most common short form in Spanish-speaking families, and a complete given name in its own right.
- Anita — Affectionate Spanish diminutive, used at home rather than on forms; also stands alone as a given name.
- Ani — Informal, and a standard given name on its own in Armenian.
- Nahi — Informal short form taken from the back of the name; used within families more than outside them.
Saige
SAYJ
One syllable, rhyming with page and cage. The -ai- and the -a- spellings sound identical, so nothing about pronunciation changes when someone writes Sage instead.
- Sage — The base spelling, often used informally or in writing by people who default to the shorter form.
- Sai — A clipped form heard at home; also a standalone given name in other traditions.
- Saigey — Affectionate lengthening used mostly by family in the early years.

The trade-offs, name by name
Anahi
Strengths
- Works unchanged in Spanish and English spelling — no accent needed, no letters that shift between the two languages.
- Ready-made short forms already familiar to everyone: Ana and Anita need no explanation.
- Carries a documented story behind it, the Guaraní legend of the ceibo flower, rather than a bare etymology.
To consider
- The pronunciation splits along language lines: silent h and final stress in Spanish, a sounded h and middle stress in most English mouths. Worth deciding early which one you will correct people toward, and which you will let go.
- Spelling will be asked about more than you expect — Anahí, Anahy and Anai all circulate, and the accent tends to be dropped on American paperwork.
- It is far more familiar inside Spanish-speaking communities than outside them, so the amount of explaining involved may depend a good deal on where the child grows up.
Saige
Strengths
- One syllable and phonetically transparent — almost no one hesitates before saying it aloud, in any accent.
- Sounds exactly like Sage, a name and an everyday English word people already recognize, so it is never unfamiliar to the ear.
- Short enough to sit easily beside long or multi-syllable surnames.
To consider
- The default spelling in most people's heads is Sage. Expect a lifetime of gentle correction on forms, coffee cups and class lists — manageable, but constant.
- Sage is given to boys as well as girls in the US, and spelling is invisible in speech. Heard aloud, the name does not signal one or the other.
- It is a genuinely new name with no long historical record and few older bearers, so there is little in the way of established nicknames or family precedent to lean on.
