Where each name comes from
Amber
fossil resin
The English word came through French from Arabic, where it meant ambergris — the waxy substance from a whale — and the two were confused for centuries before the names separated. The stone itself is tree resin that has been buried for tens of millions of years, and it is the only gemstone that is organic, that floats in salt water, and that occasionally has an insect in it.
tree resin fossilized over tens of millions of years → the Greek word elektron names the stone → Arabic and French supply the English word amber → a physician coins the term for electricity from the Greek → an American peak in the middle 1980s
How it traveled
William Gilbert spent years rubbing things together and testing what attracted what. He established that the force amber produces is different from magnetism, coined the Latin term for it from the Greek word for amber, and effectively founded the study of the subject.
Amoura
Formed from the French word amour, 'love'
The transparent reading is French *amour* (from Latin *amor*, 'love') with a feminine -a added — a modern American formation rather than an inherited name. A second road runs through the existing names Amora and Amara, and some families arrive at this spelling from that side instead. No reference work has settled which line came first, because the name is too new to have one.
amor (Latin) → amour (Old French) → Amora → Amoura
How it traveled
The word underneath it is very old: Latin *amor* passed into Old French as *amour*, the central word of the troubadour love poetry of the twelfth century, and English took it as a loanword still printed in dictionaries today. The name Amoura, though, is recent and American — it appears in the national birth records only in this century, part of a broad move toward names ending in an open -a.

Out loud, and in short
Amber
AM-bur
Two syllables, stress at the front, exactly like the stone. There is no competing reading anywhere in English.
- Am — The front alone; short and rarely written.
- Bambi — Built from the sound; a family form with associations of its own.
Amoura
uh-MOOR-uh
The middle syllable follows the English pronunciation of amour, rhyming with 'poor'. Some families say uh-MOR-uh, closer to Amora; both are in real use, so it is worth deciding early which one you will correct people to.
- Mo — Cut from the stressed middle syllable; used informally and works for a child or an adult.
- Mora — Takes the last two syllables; informal, and a surname in its own right in Spanish.
- Ami — Informal, from the opening; also stands alone as a given name in several languages.
- Amou — A family-level shortening rather than an established form, mostly heard with small children.

The trade-offs, name by name
Amber
Strengths
- It is a plain English word that everybody can read, say and spell.
- The thing behind it is concrete, beautiful and genuinely ancient.
- It works without alteration in French, Spanish and Italian.
To consider
- It is closely dated to the 1980s in America and reads as a mother's name.
- A word name carries every use of the word, including traffic lights and warnings.
- It was very common in its decade, so she will not be the only one of her generation.
Amoura
Strengths
- The word amour is already in English dictionaries, so most people read the spelling correctly on the first try without needing it spelled out.
- Its root — Latin amor, French amour — is documented for two thousand years, even though the name itself is new.
- Sits in a large, familiar sound family with Amara, Amira and Aurora, so it is recognizable without being repeated in a classroom.
To consider
- Amora, Amorah and Amoura all circulate at once. She will likely spend her life spelling it, and the shorter Amora is the version strangers guess first.
- In English, 'an amour' means a love affair, a slightly old-fashioned and slightly scandalous usage. Most people will simply hear 'love'; a few adults will hear the other thing.
- The name is climbing quickly. A child born now may find it much more common by middle school than it is today — worth knowing if rarity is part of the appeal.
