II

The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Alessandro

Defender of men

From the Greek Alexandros, built from alexein, to defend or ward off, and andros, of a man.

Alexandros → Alexander → Alessandro

How it traveled

The root is Greek: Alexandros appears in Homer's Iliad as a second name for Paris of Troy, centuries before Alexander of Macedon made it one of the most traveled names on earth. Latin turned it into Alexander, and Italian softened the middle consonants into the double-s of Alessandro.

Alexis

defender, helper

From the Greek verb alexein, to ward off or defend. The same verb sits at the front of Alexander, which pairs it with aner, 'man'.

Alexios → Alexius → Alexis

How it traveled

The name begins as Greek Alexios, latinized to Alexius and borne by several emperors of Byzantium, among them Alexios I Komnenos in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The legend of Saint Alexius, the beggar who lived unrecognised beneath his family's staircase, spread the name across medieval Europe in sermons and vernacular poems.

Out loud, and in short

Alessandro

ah-leh-SAHN-droh

The double s stays crisp and unvoiced, and the r is a light tap in Italian. Many American speakers say al-uh-SAN-droh with a flatter first vowel, and both are widely understood.

  • Alex — The default English short form, shared with Alexander and Alexis; used by all generations and long established as a given name on its own.
  • Sandro — The traditional Italian clipping, taken from the end of the name rather than the front; stands alone as a full given name in Italy.
  • Ale — Informal Italian short form, said AH-leh, mostly within families and among Italian speakers.
  • Sandy — An older English-language short form via Alexander; used far less now than it once was.

Alexis

uh-LEK-sis

In French the stress moves to the end and the final s goes silent: uh-lek-SEE. Both are correct for their language, and families with French ties often keep the French sound.

  • Alex — The default short form for both boys and girls, and long established as a given name in its own right.
  • Lexi — Informal, used mostly for girls; also registered on its own as a given name.
  • Lex — Short and unisex, used more often by and for older speakers and in surname-style address.
  • Sasha — The Russian diminutive of Aleksei and Aleksandr; used in Slavic families and, in English, as an independent name.
  • Also Al.

The trade-offs, name by name

Alessandro

Strengths

  • Instantly recognizable across Italian, Spanish, English, French and Greek through its Alexander family — a passport name that needs no explanation abroad.
  • Two well-worn short forms with different characters: Alex, understood everywhere in English, and Sandro, the Italian one.
  • A documented line running from ancient Greek through Latin into modern Italian, with no gaps and no invented links.

To consider

  • The spelling will need repeating. Alesandro, Allesandro and Alejandro are all common mishearings, and the double-s is the detail people drop first.
  • Four syllables is a lot of name, and it pairs unevenly with long surnames. Worth saying the whole thing aloud with yours a few times.
  • Alex is such an easy landing place that he may be Alex to most people by second grade, whether or not that was the plan.

Alexis

Strengths

  • Recognized spelling in English — people write it correctly on the first hearing, without a spelling-out.
  • An unbroken record from Byzantine Greek through medieval Latin and French to modern English.
  • Several settled short forms already in use: Alex, Lexi, Lex.

To consider

  • In the United States this spelling is given almost equally to boys and girls, so a boy named Alexis will meet forms, teachers and strangers who assume otherwise. In France, Russia and much of southern Europe the assumption runs the other way.
  • It sits inside a crowded family — Alexa, Alexia, Alexus, Alexandra, Alexander — and Alexis is sometimes heard or written as one of those. The short form Alex belongs to all of them.
  • Alexa is now also a household voice assistant, and the two names are near enough that the joke will occasionally surface, usually from adults rather than children.
