Zowie
Feminine · “life”
Zoe is the Greek for life, and it is the word the Greek translators of Genesis used for Eve — they rendered her name by its meaning rather than transliterating it, so the first woman is called Life in that text. Zowie inserts a w between the two vowels, which is what English does when it needs to keep them apart and does not want an accent.

The story of Zowie
Zoe was a name in the Greek-speaking Christian world from early on and was carried by a Byzantine empress. English took it in the nineteenth century and it became genuinely popular in the last forty years. The two vowels side by side are a problem for English readers, and there are three solutions in circulation: a dieresis over the e, which almost nobody types; a y, giving Zoey; and a w, giving Zowie. The last is the boldest and it makes the name look like an exclamation, which is either the appeal or the drawback.
Meaning
life
From the Greek zoe, life — the ordinary word, used of biological life and, in Christian writing, of the eternal kind. The Septuagint uses it to render Eve's Hebrew name, which means the same thing, so the two are the same name in different languages.

Two syllables, stress on the first. The w is doing the job a dieresis does in French: it stops the o and the e from merging into a single sound. It is not itself pronounced.

The Rebbeca test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zowie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rebbeca climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rebbeca's path sketches the road Zowie is walking now.
Zowie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is one word, entirely positive, and impossible to forget.
- The w removes any doubt about the two vowels, which the plain spelling leaves open.
- Five letters, two syllables, and readable on sight.
- The name behind it has been in continuous use since the early Christian centuries.
- It looks exactly like an English exclamation, and that will be noticed.
- Zoe and Zoey are both far commoner and will be written instead.
- The name family is currently very well used, so a girl will meet near-namesakes.
