Where it comes from

The story of Zadok

Zadok the priest anointed Solomon king, and Handel set the account of it for George II's coronation in 1727 — Zadok the Priest has been performed at every British coronation since, which makes it the oldest continuously used piece in the ceremony. The Zadokite priestly line held the temple for centuries, and the Sadducees take their name from it.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning with a genuinely central Hebrew root behind it.
  • The initial Z keeps it distinct on any list.
  • A remarkable and continuous musical afterlife.
What to consider
  • It is unfamiliar to most Americans and will be spelled out constantly.
  • The English and Hebrew pronunciations differ at nearly every sound.
  • It is close to Zadoc and Sadoc, which are both recorded spellings.
