The story of Zacarias
Zechariah is one of the minor prophets and also the name of the priest in Luke's gospel who is struck dumb for doubting the angel and gets his voice back at his son's circumcision — that son being John the Baptist. The Greek form Zacharias is the one that reached the Romance languages, and Spanish kept it with an accent on the last syllable. It has been in ordinary use across the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world and reaches United States records with Mexican, Central American and Brazilian families.
Meaning
the Lord has remembered
Hebrew Zekharyah joins zakhar, 'he remembered', to Yah, the shortened divine name. The reading is documented and undisputed. Greek rendered it Zacharias, which is the form the New Testament uses, and Spanish and Portuguese took it from there rather than from the Hebrew directly.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Derward test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zacarias's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Derward climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Derward's path sketches the road Zacarias is walking now.
