The story of Yug
Hindu cosmology divides time into four yugas — Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali — descending in length and virtue, and the Kali Yuga we are in is the shortest and worst. The cycle then repeats. Yug is a current Indian name, and Indian emigration brought it to America, where it is in current use.
Meaning
age, epoch
From the Sanskrit yuga, 'age' or 'yoke' — the same word, from a root about joining, which also gives yoga and the English 'yoke'. The four yugas are the ages of Hindu cosmology. The Sanskrit is documented and the meaning undisputed.

The Filbert test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yug's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Filbert climbed just as high around 1938, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Filbert's path sketches the road Yug is walking now.
Yug is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- The age meaning is concrete and the four-yuga cosmology behind it is genuinely vast.
- That yuga, yoga and 'yoke' share a root is a first-rate etymology.
- One syllable, short, and never mispronounced.
- It is very short and can be swallowed by a long surname.
- It reads as specifically Indian.
- The age we are in is the worst of the four, which some will note.
