Xzavier
Masculine · “from the Basque place name Xabier”
Behind this spelling stands a castle in Navarre — Xabier, a Basque place name meaning "the new house" — carried out of the Pyrenees by a sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary who took it as his surname and made it famous from Portugal to Japan. Four centuries later, American parents added a Z, spelling out loud the eg-ZAY of the first syllable. The result is a name everybody can already pronounce and almost nobody spells the same way twice.

The story of Xzavier
Xabier, in Basque, comes from etxe berri — new house — and named a fortress in the kingdom of Navarre. A member of that castle's family joined the first Jesuits in the 1530s and traveled as a missionary to India, the Malay peninsula and Japan; his canonization spread the surname across the Catholic world as a given name, becoming Javier in Spanish and Saverio in Italian. In English it settled as Xavier, pronounced with the eg- at the front more often than not. Xzavier is the American branch of that line: a phonetic respelling that appeared in US records in the second half of the twentieth century and grew alongside a wave of Z-inserted spellings, strongest in California, Texas and Florida.

The Jemal test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Xzavier's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jemal climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jemal's path sketches the road Xzavier is walking now.
Xzavier sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The sound is already familiar across the English-speaking world, so no one has to be taught how to say it.
- A documented line back to a Basque place name and a sixteenth-century saint, not a recent coinage.
- Ready-made short forms — Zay, Xav, Xavi — all in genuine use.
- Works in Spanish, Portuguese, French and Catalan without translation, which matters in its strongest states.
- The Z makes the eg-ZAY pronunciation explicit rather than optional.
- The default spelling is Xavier. This one will be corrected on forms, rosters and coffee cups for life, and the correction never quite finishes.
- Inserting a Z is a recognizably American habit of the late twentieth century, and some readers will date the name by that letter alone.
- Two rare letters make a long word for a small hand learning to write it — though children manage this faster than adults expect, and the short forms are there from day one.
