Where it comes from

Our story of Wyona

English words beginning wy are almost all names or heraldry, and the best of them is the wyvern: a dragon with two legs instead of four, wings, and a barbed tail, which turns up on coats of arms across Britain and on the flag of Wessex. The word came from the Old French wivre, a viper, which is the Latin vipera worn down; the extra n on the end was added in English by mistake and stuck. Heralds are strict about the distinction between a wyvern and a dragon, and almost nobody else has ever observed it. It is a small demonstration of what the wy opening does to a word in English: it makes it look ancient, ceremonial and slightly invented, all of which the wyvern is.

Winona is the usual suggestion and that name comes from a Dakota word. Whether this spelling descends from it or was assembled independently is not recorded, and the y makes the question harder rather than easier.

Wyona sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1930, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Wyona sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three open syllables with no difficult sounds carry well and are easy to hear.
  • Ona comes off the back of it as a short form without any work.
  • The opening is visually distinctive, which is what it was chosen for.
What to consider
  • Winona and Wynona are both commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • The y invites readers to try a short i first, so the name is mispronounced on sight more than most.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
