The story of Wynette
Virginia Wynette Pugh was working as a hairdresser in Alabama and singing wherever she could when a Nashville producer signed her and decided her first name would not do. He gave her a new one taken from a film, and it stuck so completely that most people assume the whole name was invented for the stage. In fact only half of it was: Wynette was on her birth certificate, given to her by her family, and it is the part of the name that came from somewhere. She went on to write and record some of the most durable American songs of her generation, several of them about the arithmetic of a marriage, and to spend a working life in an industry that had already demonstrated on day one what it thought of her own name.
Meaningscholars disagree
white, fair, or blessed
If the first element is the Welsh one — and it is spelled exactly as Welsh spells it — then it means white, and by extension fair, holy or blessed, which is one of the most productive elements in the whole Welsh naming system. If instead the name is built on the English surname Wynn, the root is a different word again, an Old English one about joy or friendship. The ending is a French diminutive with no meaning of its own. So the reading depends on which language the first syllable is being read in, and the spelling does not say.
How the name formed
- Welsh gwyn, white or blessed, loses its initial consonant in compounds
- The English surname Wynn develops from a separate Old English word
- French -ette is borrowed into English as a decorative ending
- Wynette appears in American records as a given and a middle name
- A country singer carries it as the half of her name that was real

Two syllables with the stress on the second. The Welsh element on its own would have a different vowel, closer to the one in win said long, but in this compound English reduces it to almost nothing.

Fashion outlook
Wynette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A firm final stress that makes the name carry and stops it sounding fussy
- Two good short forms, one Welsh and old, one American and currently fashionable
- Rare enough to be individual while being entirely easy to say
- It is closely associated with one singer, and that association arrives before anything else does.
- The spelling competes with Winette and Wynetta, both of which will be tried.
- The meaning depends on which language the first syllable is read in, so no single answer can be given.
