The story of Winston
The name is English soil first: villages called Winston, then families who took the village name with them. It crossed into use as a first name through the Churchill family, who used the maternal surname Winston for a son born in the seventeenth century, and kept it in circulation down the generations to the statesman born in the 1870s. That one bearer carried the name out of England and into every corner of the English-speaking world, and George Orwell borrowed it for the central figure of his 1949 novel with that history fully in mind. In the United States it settled in as a first name in its own right, no longer needing a surname behind it.

Two Old English sources feed the same spelling. The place names behind Winston combine the personal name Wine, meaning "friend", with tūn, "enclosure, settlement" — so "Wine's farmstead". A separate Old English personal name, Wynnstān, joins wynn "joy" with stān "stone". Both are genuine, and by the time Winston was a surname the two had blurred together.
