Willodean
Feminine · “Will and helmet”
The o in the middle of Willodean is a joining vowel, and English borrowed the idea from Greek. Speedometer, thermometer, kilometre: none of those words needs the o for meaning, and all of them need it to be sayable. Willodean is doing the same thing with two English names.

The story of Willodean
Greek could not put certain consonants next to each other either, and its solution was to insert a vowel at the seam of a compound, almost always an o. English took that habit along with the Greek words themselves and then generalized it, so that modern coinages made from English or Latin parts still reach for the same vowel when the join is awkward. American naming did the same thing independently and probably without noticing: a name ending in a consonant cluster cannot simply be glued to one beginning with another, so something goes in between, and an unstressed o, i or a will do. What looks like an extra syllable added for prettiness is usually a repair.
Meaning
Will and helmet, plus a valley
The first element is from William, which joins a Germanic word for will or desire to one meaning a helmet, so the whole means something like resolute protection. The second is Dean, from a word for a valley. The joining vowel between them means nothing at all. Compound names of this kind do not add their halves together into a new sense; they simply stand next to each other.

Pronouncing Willodean
WIL-oh-deen
Three syllables with the stress at the front and a secondary one at the back. The middle syllable is the joining vowel and carries no weight, which is why some families reduce it almost to nothing and others give it a full o.

Fashion outlook
Willodean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves are entirely familiar in English, so the name is understood immediately.
- Willa and Dean are two short forms with nothing in common and both are current.
- Written as one word it works as a single name and needs no hyphen.
- Willadean and Willodene exist for the same sound, so spelling it out is permanent.
- The name is firmly dated to the early twentieth century in American records.
- Three syllables with two stresses is a lot of name, and a short form will be chosen early.
