English has never settled on a feminine of William and has tried at least five. Wilhelmina, Willa, Wilma, Willette and this are all attempts at the same job, from four different languages, and none of them has ever become the obvious answer the way Josephine or Georgina did.

Where it comes from

The story of Willetta

The Dutch had no such difficulty and their answer reigned for fifty-eight years. A queen came to the throne at ten, ruled through two world wars, refused to leave for London until the government insisted, broadcast to the occupied country throughout the war and was described by one wartime prime minister as the only real man among the governments-in-exile. She abdicated in favor of her daughter after half a century. The form of the name she carried is the fullest and most formal available — and English-speaking countries, with that example in front of them for two generations, still declined to adopt it.

Meaning

resolute protection, at second hand

The Germanic elements behind the man's name mean will and helmet. This form reaches them through a shortening and an Italian ending, so the sense is inherited at some distance.

Willetta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 52 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Willetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has short forms from either end with quite different characters.
  • The rhythm is even and the name carries well at length.
  • It is rare while every part of it is completely familiar.
What to consider
  • Willette and Wilhelmina are both in use and get substituted.
  • The diminutive ending makes it a small version of a shortening.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
