The story of Whitnee
In 1793 Eli Whitney built the cotton gin, which pulled seeds from short-staple cotton fifty times faster than by hand; instead of making slavery less necessary, as some had expected, it made cotton hugely profitable and slavery spread with it across the Deep South. In 1864 the California Geological Survey named the highest peak in the Sierra Nevada after its chief, Josiah Whitney. Whitnee, with its double e, is one of the spellings of Whitney used by American families.
