The usual story is that this name was invented for a play, and that is only half true. The form was already reachable from Welsh: Gwendolen and its relatives shorten toward exactly this shape, and the parts needed to arrive at it independently were sitting there before anyone wrote it down as a coinage.

Where it comes from

The story of Wendie

One letter from this name is an English verb that has left a very large fingerprint. To wend means to go, and it is still used in one fossilized phrase about wending one's way. Its old past tense was went. English then largely abandoned the verb but kept the past tense, and attached it to a completely different verb: go, whose own past was once something like yode. So the commonest past tense in the language belongs to a verb almost nobody uses any more, borrowed across because go had lost its own and needed one. It is the clearest case in English of a word surviving only as somebody else's grammar.

If the name is a coinage it has no meaning at all. If it is a shortening of the Welsh compounds it inherits their first element. Both routes were available at the same time and the record cannot separate the families that took each.

Fashion outlook

Wendie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is soft, settled and never needs a second attempt.
  • The Welsh route gives it a genuine ancestry that the coinage story denies it.
  • It is far rarer than the standard spelling while sounding identical.
What to consider
  • Wendy is overwhelmingly standard and this spelling gets corrected constantly.
  • The name is firmly attached to the middle of the last century.
  • The character it is usually credited to follows it everywhere.
