Where it comes from

The story of Urbano

Latin urbanus described a city dweller, and because Romans assumed that city dwellers were polished and country people were not, the word also came to mean refined and witty. English borrowed it twice. The first borrowing, urban, kept the geographical sense and is now a word about planning and population density. The second, urbane, kept the social sense and means smooth and civilized. They are the same word, separated in English by a single silent letter and by several hundred years of borrowing. The parallel split happened to the Latin for the countryside, which gave English both rural and rustic, and the second of those is not a compliment either.

Meaning

of the city

The Latin urbanus means belonging to the city, as opposed to the countryside. The reading is settled and the name was carried by several popes, which is how it spread.

Urbano sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 20 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Urbano sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and easy to explain in three words.
  • Three open syllables with nothing difficult in them work in several languages.
  • It is entirely ordinary in Spanish and Italian and genuinely rare in the United States.
What to consider
  • English readers will put the stress in the wrong place on first sight, and the correction becomes routine.
  • The English word urban sits inside it, which people will notice and mention.
  • Outside Spanish-speaking communities it will need explaining, and it will need the same sentence for life.
