Tytianna
Feminine
Tytianna sits between two very grand names and cannot be assigned to either. One is Shakespeare's fairy queen; the other is the Russian name that Pushkin gave to the heroine of the poem every Russian schoolchild still memorises. The spelling points at both and settles neither.

The story of Tytianna
Pushkin's Tatyana writes a letter. She is a country girl who falls in love with a bored aristocrat, sits up all night writing to tell him so, and is answered with a lecture about how she will grow out of it; years later he meets her again as a married woman in Petersburg, falls in love with her himself, and is refused. The letter is quoted, set to music, memorised and parodied across the whole Russian-speaking world, and the name was rare before the poem and ordinary after it. It is one of the clearest cases anywhere of a single literary work making a name.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Titania and Tatiana are unrelated. The first is an epithet from Latin poetry meaning a daughter of the Titans, which Shakespeare took and attached to a fairy. The second is the feminine of a Roman family name and became one of the great Russian names. Tytianna could be a respelling of either — the vowels involved are all unstressed and interchangeable in American spelling — and no birth record carries the reasoning.
How the name formed
- a Roman family name gives the Russian Tatiana
- a Latin epithet gives Shakespeare his fairy queen
- Pushkin makes the Russian name ordinary
- American spellings blur the two together
- Tytianna appears in the record in the late 1980s
