Where it comes from

Our story of Tyrah

Tyrian purple was made from sea snails, and the process was appalling. The dye comes from a gland in a murex, each animal yielding a drop; the glands were extracted, left in the sun and then boiled in lead vats for days, and the smell was bad enough that dyeworks were legally confined to the edges of towns. Estimates run to ten thousand snails for a single gram of dye, and a full-length garment could cost more than a house. That is why purple meant royalty: it was a straightforward price signal, and Roman law eventually restricted the deepest shade to the emperor. The industry left mounds of crushed shells along the Levantine coast that are still visible. The color also improved with exposure to light instead of fading, which no other ancient dye did.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Tyra is a Scandinavian name built on the god Tyr; it is also an American build on a free front and ending; and it is the English spelling of a Phoenician city. Nothing in the record chooses, and the added h is a modern spelling device borrowed from Hebrew transliteration.

Pronouncing Tyrah

TY-ruh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The final h is completely silent and marks nothing except that the spelling is a modern one.

Fashion outlook

Tyrah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
  • Ty detaches cleanly and works for a child of either sex.
  • The sound is familiar even where the spelling is not.
What to consider
  • Tyra is far commoner and will be written for it.
  • The added h is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • Three unrelated origins are possible, so the meaning question has no single answer.
